I'm making a commercial to be put Online, it's going to be about
45 seconds and I guess I would like to know the best medium to record on as well as the most accessible form of compression to have it stream off my site.

I'm planning on doing this in DV, I have access to at least one camera. I'm also thinking about lighting...most of the action will take place in the city during the day, but I'm going to need to shoot someone in an in closed space...kinda like a laundry cart or dumpster. If I'm shooting in a small space and I want it to look "dark" while still showing some action, will this even be possible when it's viewed from the web? Anyone with similar experiences using this shite?

first of all use a 3 chip digital such as the SONY VX-2000. As far as lighting goes, one or two portable lights with barn doors and battery packs should do. I would get some large reflectors, over 20" diameter. Now you should be able to do some brightness/contrast adjust when you encode for the web, but you may wish to do that adjustment on the individual segments BEFORE you complete an edit. That way, overall, the exposure will look even. The VX-2000 has adjustable exposure, so with the use of an NTSC monitor on the set and a light meter you should be able to get the right exposure all around (although with no light and an 18 dB video gain boost it's going be grainy). Don't forget a good wireless lav setup for your subject (Sennheiser Evolution series for example) or a high quality boom mic and pole. Make sure you have a sound guy, to battle the acoustics of a small space with hard surfaces.

As far as the easiest way to encode: encode as an .avi, 320x240, 15fps, 22.050 khz audio sample rate, preferably direct digital to digital, using vidcap or an app such as video vegas (by sonic foundary). Then process the .avi through RealProducer and Windows Media Encoder (both are available free from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia or http://www.real.com/). Use the free Media Cleaner EZ d/l at http://www.terran.com/ to process QT. Although just using QuickTime Pro you can process .avi to QT .mov's at specific bitrates.

Alex. I shoot and host video online for a living. If you would like to contact me my e mail is gerald@addstar.com We also host streaming video for individuals and companies both windows media as well as a proprietary interactive video in which the viewer is allowed to 'interact' with the video by clicking on various objects which have been transformed by the overlay of invisible interactive buttons which call web pages. If you would like to see some of our work simple e-mail me.

Yeah, Alex didn't mention it in his post but the commercial was for new Sony Time Machines. GRD bought one and went back in time to help him out because the commercial came out shitty. Also to tell him that before they release it they should tell Sony that there is a glitch in the time machine because it changes actual time but it has a problem with other electronic devices because the time remains the same on any electronic device that keeps time, (which is why his post is current even though he's currently living in the year 2001. Also GRD got some inside tips from the next generation time machines that were made in early 2004 and he's going to give Alex that info so he can give it to Sony andaslkj;;;;;;;;;;;;;;dfajalk;sfa;sldfkjasl;dkfjasdlkfjasdlkfjasldkfjas;ldfkjas;ldfjasldkf ja;sldkfjasldfkjadslf;ajsdflkajsdflajfsldfkj;asdofijdsofijas;dgijasdgo;iajsdfasodifjasdf.
