View Full Version : a great scene for two women
Okay NYC-
Anyone have a suggestion for a great scene for two women. My scene partner and I have been searching madly... film, tv, theater... We are both in our early 30's.
Thanks!

Henrietta Hudson, Meow Mix, Ruby Fruit all of these places are great scenes for two women.
Zing!
Sorry, I am of no help.

I highly recomend the first scene in the second act of Hot, Horny Nurses in Heat Pt. VI. If you have not seen it yet, as James Lipton would say, "go.out.and.rent.it.you.will.be.glad.you.did!"
But seriously, how about a scene from a mushy-chick flick like Steel Magnolia's, Terms of Endearment, Thelma & Louise or Ya-Ya Sisterhood?

Try rummaging around in there. 40th and 8th.
I would look at plays or scenes by these playwrights:
Sam Shepard, Marsha Norman, DOnald Margulies, Wallace Shawn, and Paula Vogel.
Rock.

I second Proof- the scenes between Catherine and Claire are great, especially the one at the end ("I want a doctor named Dr. Von Heimlich. Please find one.")
Also A Girl's Guide to Chaos, Extremities, Betty's Summer Vacation.

Plays just off the top of me head:
'Night, Mother
Angels in America (a few good scenes between 2 female characters in both plays)
The Tale of the Alergist's Wife
Twelve Night (girl dressed like her brother and the girl in love w/ the brother)
As for films:
Either Woody Allen film: Interiors, Hannah and her Sisters
Girl, Interrupted (if you wanna go the bravado route)
White Oleander
Thelma and Louise

My acting class was just talking about a great play with monologues and scenes for women called "Four dogs and a Bone" by I think someone named Shenley.

"Four Dogs and a Bone" by John Patrick Shanley. I was in a small production of this on a Greek Island. Good times. There's a perfect scene for class, a stand off between a seasoned actress and an ingenue.
Shanley is currently helping youngsters workshop stuff at the Public. It's only $15.

Top Girls by Caryl Churchill -- in the second half of the play. Really good scene between English sisters, if you aren't put off by the accent.

It depends if you want classical (or Period) or contemporary -
Classic / Period: SENSE & SENSIBILITY, MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, ELECTRA, O'Neill's ANNA CHRISTIE is being done a lot by regional theatres now, Chekhov writes great women as well.
Contemporary: Wendy Wasserstein is awesome, PROOF is great if overdone of late, Charles Busch writes great women if you want comedy, I second GIRLS GUIDE TO CHAOS, WOMEN ON THE VERGE (?)- Three women play - fun.
I would also suggest going to Drama Books and asking the staff (They love to help) and then going to Lincoln Center - Library for the Performing Arts. You can get them for free - and copy specific scenes if needed.
Thanks for all the great feedback. You all great.

I did the confessional scene between Biff and Happy Loman, Death of a Salesman in an acting class. It was a lot of fun and the class loved it.

Savage in Limbo - John Patrick Shanley (Thanks for mentioning him in previous posts - I wouldn't have remembered otherwise)
Closer - recent British, can't remember playwright's name - there MIGHT be scenes between the two women, I can't really remember

This is a great thread, esp. for a novice.
In general does anyone have any recommendations of contemporary women playwrights or plays w/ female central characters in addition to what's already been mentioned here?
Thanks very much!

All of Caryl Churchill's stuff has fantastic scenes between women. Especially the aforementioned Top Girls.
